PERFORMANCE

Despite being a treat for those in the rear seats, the S Class S500 L is also something of a driver's car: it contains a V8 engine that will power the huge vehicle to 62MPH in just 4.8 seconds. The experience is surprisingly smooth, with engine noise barely present at low throttle openings, before developing into a throaty V8 roar as you approach the red line.

The car has Airmatic suspension and Active Body Control, leading to a refined, performance-orientated drive that is both pleasant and confidence-inspiring. Even in Sport mode, the S500 L remains flat and composed through the corners. This is aided by the fact that the steering is electronic, lending a more weighty feel to the wheel and giving the diver the ability to execute moves that would normally be associated with a much smaller car.

The driver also benefits from Magic Body Control, which uses cameras to assess the road ahead and prime individual suspension units to ensure that they are at the optimal setting for the terrain. The result is that you'll feel like you're gliding over even the most uneven road surfaces.

EXTERIOR

Our beautiful, gleaming black S500 L is unmistakeably a Mercedes. Featuring the classically sleek looks of the S Class range, it's a lithe machine whose extra length doesn't detract from the impression of power that it leaves upon the viewer. This athletic design is accentuated by the prominent three pointed star motif, full LED headlights and a taut rear end. Although it's more subtle in appearance than its rivals at Rolls Royce and Bentley, you'll be left in no doubt that this a luxurious, powerful car.

HISTORY

The origins of the Mercedes S Class lie in the Mercedes W187 220 and W186 300, both of which were unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show in 1951. The W186 was a groundbreaking machine - with a 3 litre straight six engine it could do 100MPH and became the fastest German production car available at the time. This innovative W series continued with the W180 220, which made significant improvements in both safety and comfort, followed by the 'Fintail' Mercedes-Benz W111/112, which featured inventions such as front and rear crumple zones, and three-point seatbelts. Next came the W100 600 limousine, with a 6.3 litre V8, and the W108/109 saloons. A game-changing idea came to Mercedes in 1966 - take the huge engine from the W100 600 limousine, and put it into the W109, creating a car - the 300SEL 6.3 - that could do 0-62MPH in just 5.7 seconds. Not bad for something that weighed nearly two tonnes! In 1972 Mercedes Benz renamed their W116 model as the W116 S class, sowing the seeds of one of the world's most recognisable luxury car names. This particular model was also the first to get features such as ABS, a turbodiesel engine and cruise control. Every succeeding model came with yet more innovation, marking the S Class models out as pioneers in comfort and passenger safety. The 1991 W140 S-class , for example, was the first car in the world to feature the Electronic Stability Programme, and was Mercedes' first car with a 12-cylinder engine. The new S Class, launched only recently, is the W222 model. Featuring a host of improvements and innovations - particularly in their electronics - these cars are the pinnacle of automotive brilliance. To experience the luxury, comfort and safety that only comes with a Mercedes-Benz S Class, rent our new Mercedes Benz s350 Bluetec AMG today.
